Job description

Position Overview:

qnectU is an established Managed IT Security Service Provider (MSP/MSSP) supporting a diverse portfolio of US-based clients. We are expanding our Professional Services & Advanced Engineering team and are seeking a highly experienced Senior Infrastructure Engineer based in South Africa.

This position is intentionally designed for a senior-level, expert engineer who prefers advanced engineering, architecture, and project-based work over day-to-day reactive support. The ideal candidate values stability, technical ownership, clear expectations, and long-term employment, and brings a consultative mindset to client environments.

About the Role:

As a Senior Infrastructure Engineer, you will operate as a technical authority within qnectU, responsible for implementing, optimizing, and improving complex client environments. While occasional escalation support is expected, the primary focus of this role is advanced engineering, infrastructure modernization, and professional services delivery.

This is not a helpdesk or firefighting role. Success in this position is measured by the quality of implementation, successful project delivery, environment stability, and long-term technical improvements.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Advanced Engineering & Implementation

  • Implement, optimize, and enhance enterprise-grade IT environments

  • Serve as THE senior technical authority for:

    • Microsoft 365 tenant architecture and security

    • Windows Server infrastructure (AD, GPOs, security hardening)

    • Network implementation, segmentation, and optimization

    • Virtualization and infrastructure modernization

  • Provide expert-level technical direction aligned with best practices and security standards

Professional Services & Project Delivery

  • Lead and execute advanced projects, including:

    • Microsoft 365 migrations and tenant consolidations

    • Server migrations, upgrades, and decommissioning

    • Network redesigns and infrastructure improvements

    • Security architecture enhancements and remediation projects

  • Own projects end-to-end: planning, execution, validation, and documentation

  • Deliver predictable outcomes with minimal rework or escalation

Client Technology Strategy & Alignment

  • Assess existing client environments and identify architectural gaps or risks

  • Develop and execute remediation and modernization plans

  • Ensure client environments align with qnectU standards, security frameworks, and industry best practices

  • Act as a trusted technical advisor during complex client engagements

Limited Escalation & Expert Support

  • Serve as the final escalation point for highly complex or atypical technical issues

  • Perform deep root-cause analysis and implement permanent corrective actions

  • Reduce recurring issues through engineering improvements rather than temporary fixes

Documentation, Standards & Mentorship

  • Produce and maintain expert-level technical documentation in IT Glue

  • Contribute to internal standards, templates, and engineering best practices

  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to Tier 2 and Tier 3 engineers when appropriate

Required Experience & Expertise:

Experience

  • 15-20+ years of overall IT experience

  • 4+ years in an MSP or consulting environment delivering project-based engineering work
(Experience limited to internal corporate IT alone will not be sufficient)

  • Demonstrated success delivering complex infrastructure and migration projects

  • Expert-level Microsoft 365 administration and architecture experience

  • Expert Windows Server administration (Active Directory, GPOs, security design)

  • Strong experience with PSA and RMM platforms (Datto Autotask and Datto RMM preferred)

  • Exceptional documentation discipline (IT Glue experience strongly preferred)

Advanced Technical Competencies

  • Microsoft 365: Exchange Online, SharePoint, Teams, Intune, Entra ID

  • Windows Server architecture, security, and lifecycle management

  • Advanced networking concepts, implementation, and troubleshooting

  • Backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity planning

  • Security-first engineering mindset

Professional Attributes

  • Clear, professional written and verbal communication (English)

  • Ability to operate autonomously in a remote environment

  • Strong project ownership and accountability

  • Calm, methodical, and detail-oriented approach to complex engineering challenges

  • High standards for quality, consistency, and documentation

Certifications (Preferred)

  • Microsoft certifications (M365, Azure, or Enterprise)

  • CCNA, CompTIA Network+, or equivalent networking certification

  • CompTIA Security+

  • ITIL Foundation

  • Vendor certifications (Datto, Kaseya, SonicWall, WatchGuard, etc.)

Working Hours & Expectations:

  • Core working hours aligned with U.S. business hours

  • Occasional after-hours work for planned projects or critical incidents

  • Strong emphasis on sustainable workloads and long-term work-life balance (this is NOT a 60-hour-per-week role)

What We Offer:

  • 100% remote, long-term position

  • Stable, established company (not a startup)

  • Senior-level role focused on engineering and professional services—not constant support

  • Exposure to international clients and complex, enterprise-grade environments

  • Ongoing training and professional development support

This role is ideal for a senior engineer seeking a stable, long-term remote position focused on advanced engineering, project delivery, and professional services excellence.
